Uploading documents and supported file types
Last updated: October 2, 2026
For the best results, upload clean, readable, unlocked documents into Filed.
Recommended document types
PDFs are generally the best format for tax source documents. Clear image files may also work when text is readable, but scanned PDFs are preferred for most tax workflows.
What to avoid
Password-protected files
Locked PDFs or restricted documents
Heavily redacted documents
Blurry, cut-off, sideways, or incomplete scans
Empty folders or placeholder files from a connected DMS/PMS
Prior-year returns
Upload the prior-year return separately from current-year source documents when possible. Filed uses it to understand the client’s historical tax situation and to identify missing documents.
If documents appear uploaded but unprocessed
Refresh the Binder and confirm the files are visible. If they remain unprocessed, contact support with the client name, document names, and approximate upload time.
If documents came from another system
If you imported documents from Canopy, Karbon, Truss, or another system, confirm the files are visible in that system and stored in the expected location. Documents uploaded directly to Filed do not automatically sync back to those external systems.
