Do I need a new IRS §7216 consent to use Filed?

Last updated: August 5, 2026

Filed is designed to operate within IRS §7216 requirements. For most firms, using Filed does not require obtaining new §7216 consents beyond the firm’s existing engagement terms.

That said, each firm is responsible for determining how §7216 applies to its own practice, clients, and engagement agreements. We recommend that firms consult their own legal counsel for advice specific to their circumstances.

Why is legal review still recommended?

This recommendation is not intended to suggest that Filed requires an additional consent. Rather, it recognizes that firms’ engagement terms, workflows, and regulatory obligations can differ, and their counsel is best placed to make the final determination for the firm.

How Filed handles customer data

  • Filed is designed to operate as a technology and tax-preparation service provider.

  • Customer data remains in a secure, U.S.-based environment and is used solely to provide services to the firm.

  • Filed can provide architecture and data-flow documentation to support a firm’s legal or security review.
