Why did my return show a system issue or error during processing?

Last updated: April 7, 2026

A system issue or error during processing indicates that something unexpected occurred while Filed was running the return. This can happen for a variety of reasons, but the system is designed to give you as much context as possible when this occurs.

What to Do First

When a system error occurs, Filed will display a pop-up message explaining what went wrong. This message is the most important first step — it will often describe the nature of the issue and provide guidance on how to proceed.

In most cases, the recommended action is one of the following:

  1. Re-trigger the process by clicking the Re-run Tax Prep button. Many errors are transient and will resolve themselves on a second attempt.

  2. Follow the specific instructions in the pop-up message, which may involve uploading a missing document, correcting a setting, or taking an action in your tax software.

If the Issue Persists

If re-triggering does not resolve the error, the issue may require deeper investigation by the Filed engineering team.

What to do: Contact Filed support with a description of the error message you received. Our team will review the logs and work with you to identify and resolve the root cause.
