UltraTax: Terminal Server and Virtual Environment Support

Last updated: August 13, 2026

Filed supports UltraTax CS workflows in terminal server, virtual desktop, colo, and self-hosted environments through the Filed ProWork desktop application.

Does Filed work in a terminal server or virtual environment?

Yes. The Filed ProWork desktop application is compatible with these environments. It should be installed and available for each user who will run AI Tax Prep.

Does colo, self-hosted, or terminal server setup prevent importing into UltraTax?

No. UltraTax imports remain fully functional as long as the Filed ProWork desktop app is running in the background during the data-entry phase. The app transmits data into UltraTax as part of the workflow.

Where does the ProWork app need to run?

For data entry, the ProWork app must be active inside the virtual environment or terminal server session on the user’s workstation. Users may use Filed outside the virtual environment when that is faster, but ProWork must be running inside the environment whenever they run AI Tax Prep.

How is this different from SurePrep?

Filed follows a similar requirement for virtualized UltraTax environments: the desktop app must be active inside the virtual environment during data entry to ensure a successful AI Tax Prep run.

Key takeaway

Virtualized environments are supported, but ProWork must be running in the same environment where UltraTax data entry occurs.
